BOOTING and BOTS How people are booted? Along with the disappearance of the user rooms a nasty plague has swept into yahoo messenger chat rooms, its called booting. Booting generally means that with a series of quick PMs, Conference invites, audibles, friend invites, etc..., a yahoo chat protocol (the way you communicate with others) or your chat client, namely yahoo messenger, is overwhelmed and crashes forcing the user to logon again. A plethora of programs are available to achieve this. These booter programs used to be hard to come by, but they are becoming increasingly more available. The lack of user rooms, tons and tons of bots (aka yahoo ID's) , and all this booting has made Yahoo even more a troublesome for users. The following are a few tips, and chat client reviews to avoid booting. How Spam Bots Work? There are three (3) types of bots PM bots and room spammer bots. 1.) PM bots send you individual PM's if you are using yahoo messenger they will drive you to distraction because yahoo messenger insists that each pm be addressed immediately. PM bots go room to room and PM everyone in the room individually. 2.) Room spammer bots put messages in the room, the message must vary somewhat other wise yahoo won't allow a bot to display a repetitive message. Some of the typical room spammer bot questions are like "I hate the eagles, man its boring in here, did you see napoleon dynamite?" , smiley bots, and poker chat bots are popular as well. These room bots aren't as irritating, but the ones with long messages or the ones that pretend to chat to each other are distracting. 3. Room Lurker Bot. This bot is just parked in the room in the hopes that you will look at the profile and click on links. From my experience these bots actually work better than all of the bots listed above. These bots generally aren't a nuisance, unless they are in a popular room like most of the main (24/7) rooms on yahlist.net. In which case they take up space that could be occupied by a real chatter. Often you will find 20 out of 50 allowed profiles in a room are lurker bots. New Bots are created on a daily basis so the tactic of iggying every bot isn't going to work! Question: Can I Boot Bots? Answer: Yes and No, battling bots is like fighting the hydra you may cut a head off but one quickly grows back in its place. Potentially you can boot a profile from a room, but most bots log off and log back in, with every room they spam. Additionally the bot software, I have seen, treats booted, banned profiles and, non working profiles (yahoo id's), all the same. Profiles are cheap. Even, If you were to boot a bot profile, the spamming software just load up next profile on the list and spam with it, until it stopped working. The bots and spam machines are brute force equipment. The best way to fight them is to pretend they don't exist. WHEN THE BOTS STOP MAKING MONEY they will stop spamming. I don't think that will ever happen but if you are using bot ignoring chat clients you won't care! So what are my options? Different Chat Clients are Your best solution to boots, and bots!!! If you are using Yahoo messenger to chat, you are wearing a t-bone steak suit in the lion cage at the zoo. Everyone is gonna eat you up Bots, and Booters!!! Most of These chat clients are FREE so what have u got to lose! Here is a listing of Yahoo the most used Yahoo chat clients!! Understanding Chat Protocols and Booting: Chat protocols are from my basic understanding the way in which your chat client (i.e. yahoo messenger, yahelite, etc.) communicate with the chat room and other chatters. There are three(3) basic categories of Protocols. The oldest is the YCHT protocol, followed by CHAT2, then YMSG. Basically the older they are the less features they have and the newer protocol YMSG has all the new features. YCHT protocol has been disncontinued by Yahoo as of April 2006 The older protocol are less reliable in transmitting messages, this makes them actually more boot proof because they don't transmit all the booters messages, and give less options to boot. The new protocol YMSG is very reliable in transmitting every message and packets, and has lots of options meaning booters have lots of options to boot you and most of their packets will be delivered. Here's a brief synopsis of the different protocols.
Additional Booting Information: At one point I was trained by the army as a radio operator. I find it ironic that much of what I was taught about dealing with radio jamming in combat is valid when dealing with booting. I wish I could find an old manual around so I could rewrite some the points that were taught to me! 1. Don't give a booter any indication of success. Don't say to the room "Some one just booted me!!" This gives a booter confirmation that he has succeed and he now knows what will work for him the next time. Never tell anyone you were just booted! 2. Don't give a booter any indication of failure. Booting software is flakey hacker stuff often it doesn't do anything at all and is prone to lockup or crash. Because of this the simple act of telling a booter, that you see his attempt to boot you, gives him information to work off of. Saying things like "That boot attempt was lame" tells the booter to either do the same thing, only with more bots and harder, and longer, or more than likely it tells him to try something else. 3. Don't give a booter information about what chat client or tunnel you are using. If a booter knows what chat client you are using he can tailor his boot attempt to your chat client. A booter can get information about what chat client by what avatar you are using, turn it off. He can find out information from your iggy messages, I know you get satisfaction from them, but turn them off. 4. When tempers start to rise in the chat room put your shields up. Remember what old Captain Kirk would do if he saw trouble. Putting shields up means closing down pm's, and conference invites, audible, etc.... Or in Yahelite it means going with a tougher protocol!!! If a booter can not get any information or indication of success from you he will likely move on to another more vulnerable target. When a booter is running boot software he has somewhat valuable collection of bots (yahoo id's), perhaps hundreds of them, continued use of them runs the risk of total chat ban. Which means you have to recreate your bot army again, which is time consuming. The more minor infraction means a chat ban for a few hours (like a penalty box), as a result of this booters won't make high value attacks on someone that they can't get any success from. Finally take careful note of who gets really excited in a chat room or a discussion forum when you begin to discuss boot prevention. Some of the juvenile booters are obvious, but chances are that there are many more stealthy booters out there, in your room and on forums, that don't want folks to find out how to resist booting. When you discuss boot prevention in a chat room and start to hear really puffy excited talk from someone about "NO CHAT CLIENT IS UNBOOTABLE", "THAT SOFTWARE SUCKS", "I HEAR THAT HAS VIRUSES IN IT", "ANYONE CAN BOOT THAT",
Take careful note of who is getting excited!! Its not an absolute indication, but there has been a serious attempt by booters to stifle folks from becoming more anti boot savvy.

BTW if you are using boot software a few important notes: To begin with booting is useless. These days with modern chat clients the best you can hope for is to boot someone from the room for a few seconds. Whoopee, now they will come back into the room mad and determined. So now what have you accomplished? Second, In your quest for the latest and greatest booters you may find, that you may be installing the latest and greatest keylogger or virus. You see if you get your latest booter and the latest virus and keylogger that comes with it. You might be lucky enough and find the virus is newer than you virus software.
